India Breaks Record Of Most COVID-19 Cases In One Day

India reported 314,835 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, the highest daily increase ever seen. The previous record was held by the United States, with 297,430 cases in January.

Hospitals in India have been overwhelmed, with some in the North and West issuing notices that they only have a few hours’ worth of medical oxygen required to keep COVID-19 patients alive. More than two-thirds of hospitals have no vacant beds. Very few people have been able to get vaccines, with growing concerns about supply.

Given this spike of cases in India, the Australian Cabinet has temporarily reduced the number of incoming flights from India by 30%. However, it is crucial to remember that whilst COVID-19 runs rampant in countries with less secure health systems, it will continue to be a risk for all. To end this pandemic, we need to end it in all countries.
