How Cpap Therapy Reduces Your Risk Of Alzheimer’s Disease April 15, 2021 About one in seven adults are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. Research shows that those with obstructive sleep apnea – a condition which disrupts your breathing during sleep - have a higher risk of developing cognitive impairment. The Michigan Medicine’s Sleep Disorders Centre analysed Medicare claims of more than 50,000 adults’ ages 65 and older who had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. Those on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy had a significantly lower risk of being diagnosed with dementia or mild cognitive impairment over the following 3 years than those not on CPAP. This study highlights the impact of sleep quality on cognitive function, suggesting that CPAP therapy may be protective against dementia risk amongst those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea.
