Australian Researchers Warn COVID-19 May Lead to a Wave of Neurological Illnesses

November 11, 2020

As the months drag on, we continue to see that COVID-19 isn’t just another flu. Many people are currently facing severe and long-term complications from this disease that we are only beginning to understand. The latest concern? Parkinson’s disease.

Australian scientists are warning people that the inflammation caused by the coronavirus could trigger a ‘third wave’ of neurological illnesses, especially Parkinson’s disease. Five years after the Spanish Flu pandemic in the 1900s there was a three-fold increase in Parkinson’s disease – and experts are concerned that history may be repeating itself. Inflammation from a viral infection like COVID-19 can trigger the development of Parkinson’s disease. It is also already known that the coronavirus can cause neurological symptoms – such as the loss of smell and taste. With this in mind, the researchers from the Florey Institute are calling for early and long-term monitoring of recovered COVID-19 patients to identify any neurological complications. Early diagnoses can save lives.

Please don’t risk your health – no one is immune to COVID-19 or its long-term effects. Maintain social distancing, wear a mask, wash your hands regularly and stay home when sick. We are all in this together.
